Anti Online Gambling Bill Moving Forward
27 Jul 2006
The news that the Goodlattte and Leach anti online gambling bills were going to be debated on the floor of the House of Representatives took the industry by surprise. It was unclear in what forum the bills would be discussed until recently when it was announced that these bills, which seek to curb online gambling activity by blocking monetary payments to the sites, will be included in a broad discussion named the "American Values Agenda". Online gambling will be included as one of society's 'evils' that are harming American's 'values'.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives said that the "American Values Agenda" will defend the founding principles of America and will protect the faith and sanctity of life and freedom that Americans hold dear. Of course, online gambling is considered by the bill sponsors to be one of these aspects that destroy the founding principles of American culture and online gambling sites 'corrupt' the country's religion.
A Republican spokesperson has revealed that it is possible that a joint Goodlatte/Leach bill could be among the first of the bills to go before the full house, possibly even before July. The bills seek to add credit cards to the list of illegal online gambling payment methods and also seek to update the Wire Act to include online gambling.
